The Glenn Crombie Centre has a mandate to promote full inclusion of students with disabilities into the academic and learning environment at Cambrian College. The Centre is a 'one-stop' area for students to receive services such as assistive technology training and access, testing accommodation arrangements, learning skills and tutoring supports, and advice related to all services each student may be eligible to receive.
Some of the features of Glenn Crombie Centre for disability services include;
-
Voice Recognition Room
The Voice Recognition Rooms provide access to voice activated multimedia computers for word processing. Dragon NaturallySpeaking is a prime example of software used by the students. This room offers students a chance to stay on top of emerging technologies in voice recognition. Training is provided by the technical staff for those who require assistance in order to become more fluent with the different options provided in this room.
-
Accessible Computer Lab
The nine station computer lab features ergonomically designed computer workstations. Here, students learn and practice computer intervention, access the Internet in a barrier-free environment, and are supported by Centre staff. At times, the lab becomes available for instruction or mini seminars in order to further train our students.
-
Equipment Trial Room
The Equipment Trial Room "B" gives students the opportunity to experience the world of the Macintosh. From computers to corresponding software, this room is provided to individuals who require specialization. Totally barrier free, students are in constant view of technical and supporting staff, thus enabling staff to provide immediate assistance to those requiring it.
-
Student Resting Room
As many students with disabilities need an area where they can rest, change positions or go for privacy, The Glenn Crombie Centre designed a resting room. This often utilized room comes equipped with three comfortable and adjustable beds, draw curtains for privacy, and call bells in case assistance is needed. Students requiring access to this room on a regular basis must meet with an Advisor to make the necessary arrangements.
-
Personal Care Room
Recognizing the need that students with physical disabilities may sometimes require a private area to take care of their personal needs, The Glenn Crombie Centre has two distinctively designed personal care rooms. Personal care rooms have been set up to meet the unique needs of students with physical disabilities as they are equipped with adjustable beds, wheelchair accessible showers and both ceiling and mobile lifts. These state of the art rooms also come with hands-free manipulation of water and toilet facilities. In addition, the Centre is equipped with a washer and a dryer to assist students living on campus whose disability prevents them from accessing community laundromats. When aid is needed, Personal Support Workers assist students with their particular personal needs. Arrangements regarding the use of these rooms are made when students meet with an Advisor.
