Position Statement
The library is a resource centre maintained for the benefit of the entire college community. The following protocols are intended to allow optimum usage of facilities and resources, while balancing the need to maintain an atmosphere conducive to academic work and study. In order to support this learning environment, the library staff may in certain circumstances request that any person in conflict with the following protocols leave the library. In addition, the staff may request to review the contents of a person's belongings and contact Cambrian College campus security if any person refuses to comply with the above request.
The Library Users Protocol concerns the following issues:
Food and Drink in the Library
Consumption of food and drink is not permitted in the library, with the exception of lidded beverages in tightly closed containers and bottles. Library users should dispose of all drink containers and refuse in the appropriate receptacles or recycling bins. No beverages are allowed at the computers.
Noise
Library users may talk quietly in areas of the library other than the silent study rooms. Noise from cell phones, audio or other electronic devices is prohibited. Library users who, in the judgment of library staff, are creating noise that is disruptive to others, will be asked to quiet down. Users who do not comply will be required to leave the library.
Computer Use and Printing
Computers are provided for students to work on assignments. Students who are using computers for other purposes, i.e. chatting or playing computer games, may be requested to give up work stations to others needing to use them for academic purposes. The library printer is provided for students to print out assignments, research results or other materials related to course work. The printer is not to be used for other purposes. PowerPoint presentations are to be printed in a format displaying multiple slides per page as opposed to a one slide per page format. Students are not permitted to add or remove paper or to open the printer. Illegal usage, including copying pornographic materials or infringing copyright, is prohibited. Please refer to Cambrian College's "Computer System and Internet User Agreement."
Library Classroom
The library classroom is booked through the reference desk. It is used primarily by library staff to provide instruction to classes or groups. When not in use by library staff, it may be booked by teachers or other college employees. At the discretion of the reference desk staff, it may occasionally be used as a group study room in case of overflow or double booking of study rooms.
Group Study Rooms
Group study rooms are to be used by two or more people at a time. They may be booked in advance for periods of up to two hours.
Silent Study Rooms
Absolutely no talking or other noise is permitted in the silent study rooms.
Provision of Office Supplies and Office
Equipment to Students
Hole punches, scissors and staplers are made available to library users in a central area near the photocopiers. Library staff may provide users with pieces of tape, paper clips and scrap paper. Other office supplies/equipment are not provided by the library.
Personal Property
Library users are responsible for the safety and security of their personal property. The library staff is not responsible for belongings left unattended.
Vandalism and Theft
Vandalism to library property and materials, including books, journals, equipment and furniture, may be dealt with by campus security. Individuals found responsible for theft or vandalism will be responsible for making financial restitution.
Children
Children under the age of 14 years should be supervised by an adult. Children should not use library computers for playing games and searching the Internet; these computers are reserved for use by students and staff who are required to log in with a user name and password. If unsupervised children are found in the library, staff may call campus security to escort unsupervised children from the library premises.
