Access Science is an online encyclopedia of science and technology consisting of over 7,000 detailed articles, 2,000 biographies, and 100,000 definitions. It includes updates on scientific news and links to major web sites in the sciences.
On-Campus Access: If you are searching Access Science from a computer at Cambrian College, click on the following link or type the URL for Access Science in the appropriate box on your Internet browser: http://www.accessscience.com/server-java/Arknoid/science/AS/
Off-Campus Access: Access Science is available to students from a remote site through Cambrian College's Student 411 service.
To Search:
Quick Search:
- Enter your keywords in the box provided and click on the Search button
- A result list of articles containing your keywords will appear on the next screen; click on the title to view the full text article
- The following types of articles are designated by these initial letters:
- D: Dictionary terms
- E: Encyclopedia articles
- R: Research updates
- B: Biographies
- N: News articles
- M: Multimedia
Choose a Topic:
- Select a topic from the list in the middle of the screen by clicking on a broad subject category
- A more detailed list of topics in your selected subject area will appear on the next screen
- Click on the topic heading you wish to explore
- A list of encyclopedia articles and/or research updates will appear on the next screen
- To view the full text, click on the title of the article
Advanced Search:
- To conduct a more advanced search of your topic, click on the Advanced Search button
Top Menu:
- Search options such as Biographies, Image Galleries, and Study Center can be accessed from the tabs at the top of the screen
Browse Alphabetically:
- The A-Z option allows you to browse encyclopedia articles, research updates, or dictionary terms in alphabetical order
- Select the type of article you would like to retrieve by clicking on one of the tabs at the top of the screen (biographies, news, etc.)
- Click on the letter of the alphabet you would like to browse
Select an Article Section:
- To narrow your search to a specific section or paragraph of the encyclopedia article, click on a heading in the Contents menu
Study Center:
- Click on the Study Center tab to find options for further research of your topic, including study guides, essay topics, reading lists, and an e-mail link for asking questions about scientific and technical subjects through Access Science Q & A
To Download Articles:
Printing an Article:
- Click on Print View to display a printable version of the article
- Once the printable version is displayed on the screen, click on the Print button on the top menu bar of your Internet browser
Saving an Article:
- Once the printable version is displayed on the screen, click on File on the top menu bar of your Internet browser
- Drag the cursor down to Save As
- Select the file format and the appropriate computer drive and click on Save
Emailing an Article:
- Click on email a link at the top of the article text
- Enter your e-mail address and the e-mail address you would like to send the article to in the boxes provided on the screen
- Click on the Send Now button
