EBSCOhost 

EBSCOhost is a group of online databases accessible over the Internet that provide subject access to thousands of full text magazine, newspaper and journal articles as well as electronic books and audio books.  

On-Campus Access: If you are searching EBSCOhost from a computer at Cambrian College, click on the following link or type the URL for EBSCOhost in the appropriate box on your Internet browser: http://search.ebscohost.com/

Off-Campus Access: EBSCOhost is available to students from a remote site through Cambrian College's Student 411 service.

Basic Searching:

To Start:

  • Click on the link for EBSCOhost Web
  • Select one or more database(s) as follows by putting a checkmark beside the names of the databases you wish to search and clicking on Continue
  • EBSCOhost includes the following databases:
    • MasterFILE Elite: For magazine articles on a variety of subjects, including world news, business, and health
    • Academic Search Premier: For full text articles from over 4,500 magazines and scholarly journals in a number of academic fields, including the medical, dental and social sciences
    • Canadian Reference Centre: For full-text Canadian magazine and newspaper articles
    • Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition: For scholarly journal articles in the nursing and allied health sciences, focusing on medical and nursing research
    • CINAHL: The Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature is a comprehensive database with indexing and abstracts for journal articles on nursing and allied health professions
    • PsycARTICLES: Contains full-text articles from over 70 scholarly journals published by the American Psychological Association
    • eBook Collection: For full text electronic books on a variety of subjects, including reference works, literature, fiction, health sciences, computing, and technology.

To Exit:

  • To return to the library web site, click on the Cambrian College Library link at the top of the computer screen

To Search:

  • Before searching, you should limit your search to one or both of the following options:
    • To full text articles only
    • To magazines subscribed to by the Cambrian College Library
  • Using Boolean operators (see Searching Tips), type your keywords in the search box provided on the screen
  • Click on the Search button

To Display Records:

  • A link below the record indicates that full text is available; click on the link to display the full text article
  • To retrieve a summary or abstract, click on the title of the article
  • The note We subscribe to this magazine indicates titles available in the Cambrian College Library Periodicals Department

Top Menu Bar:

  • Subjects helps to define your search terms
  • Publications provides a list of titles indexed
  • Click on the Help link for search techniques and options

Searching Tips:

  • Using Boolean Operators:
    • To expand a search, combine terms using "or," e.g. HANDICAPPED or DISABLED
    • To narrow a search, combine terms using "and," e.g. HANDICAPPED and ONTARIO
    • Use brackets to group expanded search terms together, e.g. (HANDICAPPED or DISABLED) and (ONTARIO or CANADA)
  • To Truncate Search Terms:
    • Use * to truncate a word, e.g. CANAD* finds CANADA, CANADA'S and CANADIAN 
    • Use ? to replace one or more letters, e.g. WOM?N finds WOMAN or WOMEN

To Download Articles:

To Save Full Text Articles:

  • Click on the Full Text link below the record to retrieve the full text article on the screen
  • Click on the Save as File icon at the top of the article
  • On the next screen, you may customize the document format and/or choose a citation format (MLA, APA, etc.) before saving
  • Click on the Save button
  • When the full text article is displayed on the screen, click on File on the top menu bar
  • Drag the cursor down to Save As
  • Select the computer drive where you would like to save the file and enter your file name
  • In the Save As Type box, use the down arrow key to select the file format (Text, HTML, etc.)
  • Click on the Save button
  • Click on the Back link to return to the search screen

To Send Full Text Articles to E-Mail Accounts:

  • Click on the Full Text link at the bottom of the record to retrieve the full text article on the screen
  • Click on the E-Mail icon at the top of the article
  • Select HTML Full Text or PDF as separate attachment as appropriate
  • Type the e-mail address to which you will send the article in the box provided on the screen
  • Click on the Send button
  • Click on the Back link to return to the search screen

To Download More than One Article:

  • To mark records for downloading, click on the Add to Folder link below the records to add the articles to a folder
  • Click on the Folder tab at the top of the computer screen
  • Click in the Select All box at the top of the list of articles
  • Click on the Email or Save icon as appropriate
