Gale Databases 

The Gale databases are a suite of electronic products with access to full-text magazine, newspaper and journal articles from popular and scholarly periodicals and from publications focusing on computers, business, health, and the environment.  Access to electronic books and reference sources is also available. This product is made available to Cambrian College through funding from Knowledge Ontario.

Basic Searching:

To Start:

On-Campus Access: If you are searching the Gale databases from a computer at Cambrian College, click on the following link or type the URL for the web site in the appropriate box on your Internet browser: http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/sudb33859/

Off-Campus Access: The Gale databases are available to students from a remote site through Cambrian College's Student 411 service.

To Search All Databases:

  • Using Boolean operators, enter your search terms in the box provided on the screen and click on the Search button

To Select Databases:

  • To search only one database, click on the title of the database:
    • CPI.Q for articles from Canadian magazines and newspapers
    • Academic Onefile for peer-reviewed journal articles
    • Computer Database for articles from computer, telecommunications and electronics magazines
    • Gale Reference Library for electronic encyclopedias, almanacs, and other reference sources
    • General Business File ASAP for articles from business journals, trade magazines, industry reports, and company directories
  • Click on the link for Additional Products to search other electronic sources such as Health and Wellness Resource Center

Or...

  • Click in the Select All box to de-select all databases
  • Select the databases you wish to search from the list
  • Click on the Continue button

More Search Options:

  • From the main search page, select one or more of the databases from the list and click on the Continue button
  • On the next page, limit your results to one or more of the following:
    • Full-text documents
    • Peer-reviewed publications
    • Documents with images
  • Click on the tab for Advanced Search to limit your search by publication date, publication title, etc.
  • Browse Subjects finds your keywords in subject headings which can then be used to search for articles
  • Browse Publications provides a list of all periodical titles indexed in the databases

Searching Tips:

Using Boolean Operators:

·         To expand a search, combine terms using "or", e.g. ADOLESCENTS or TEENAGERS

·         To narrow a search, combine terms using "and", e.g. ADOLESCENTS and ONTARIO

·         Use brackets to group expanded search terms together, e.g. (ADOLESCENTS or TEENAGERS) and (ONTARIO or CANADA)

To Truncate Search Terms:

·         Use * to truncate a word, e.g. CANAD* finds CANADA, CANADA'S and CANADIAN

·         Use ? to replace one or more letters in a word, e.g. WOM?N finds WOMAN or WOMEN

To Display Records:

  • A Full-Text link below the record indicates that the full text article is available; click on the link to display the article
  • A PDF pages link displays the article in PDF format in Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • An Abstract or Citation link below the record indicates that only an abstract (summary) or citation is available; click on the links to display the abstract or citation

To Download Articles:

To Print Full Text Articles:

  • Click on the Full-Text link below the record to retrieve the full text article on the screen
  • Click on the Print icon in the box in the top right corner of the computer screen
  • Choose the printer you would like to use and click on the Print button

To Save Articles to a Computer File:

  • When the full text article is displayed on the screen, click on the Download icon at the top of the computer screen
  • Choose HTML or Plain Text format
  • Click on the Download button, then click on the Save button
  • Choose the computer drive to which you would like to save the file and enter a file name in the box provided
  • In the Save as Type box, select the desired file format (Text, HTML, etc.)
  • Click on Save

To Email Full Text Articles:

  • Click on the Full-Text link below the record to retrieve the full text article on the screen
  • Click on the Email icon at the top of the computer screen
  • Choose HTML or Plain Text format
  • Choose Full-Text or PDF format
  • Select the desired Bibliographic citation format (MLA or APA)
  • Enter the email address in the box provided on the screen
  • Click on the Send button

To Print More than One Article:

  • To mark records for printing, click in the box to the left of the record in the results list
  • Click on the Marked items tab at the top of the computer screen
  • When the marked articles are displayed on the screen, click on the Print, Email or Download link at the top of the computer screen
  • Select Full Document and the desired Bibliographic citation format (MLA or APA)
  • Select Print, Email or Download as appropriate
