Canadian Academic Universe (published by Lexis Nexis) provides access to over 5,000 online sources in a wide range of subject areas, including news, business and law.

There are six different types of easy searches:

  1. Search the News:
    • Includes full-text articles from U.S. and Canadian newspapers as well as major world news publications. Includes The Globe and Mail (from 1977 to the present), the Toronto Star (from 1985 to the present), and the Toronto Sun (from 1994 to the present)
    • Enter your keywords in the search box and select the source type you would like to retrieve (e.g. newspapers, magazines, etc.)
    • Alternatively, enter the name of the newspaper in which you would like to find the articles (e.g. The Globe and Mail), then select the appropriate title from the results list
  2. Look up a Legal Case:
    • This option searches for U.S. legal cases only. To conduct searches for Canadian cases or legislation, see Canadian Legal Searches
  3. Get Company Info:
    • Provides company profile information from Canadian, U.S. and international company directories and industry reports. Includes Standard & Poor's publications and Hoover's Company Records
    • Click on the Company Profiles link at the bottom of this section and then enter your search terms on the next page
    • Select the date range and source type you would like to search
  4. Research Countries:
    • Provides economic and political information on countries of the world.
    • Select the name of the country you would like to research from the drop-down list and then select the source type from the drop-down menu.
    • To conduct a more detailed search, click on the Browse Sources link at the bottom of this section.
  5. Research People:
    • Provides biographical information on individuals who are connected with a particular industry or occupation as well as information on elected officials. Includes obituary sources and Who's Who publications
    • Enter the last and first names of the person you would like to research and then select the type of source (biographical information or news articles)
  6. Combined Research:
    • Allows you to combine newspaper searches with company profiles and U.S. legal cases
    • Enter your keywords in the search box, then select the date range you would like to search and the types of source material you would like to include in your search
