OVID is a group of online databases accessible over the Internet with indexing, abstracting and full text articles for thousands of book and journal titles in nursing and the allied health sciences.
On-Campus Access: If you are searching OVID from a computer at Cambrian College, click on the following link or type the URL for OVID in the appropriate box on your Internet browser: http://ovidsp.ovid.com/autologin.html
Off-Campus Access: OVID is available to students from a remote site through Cambrian College's Student 411 service.
To Start:
The OVID databases include:
- Journals@OVID: For articles from hundreds of scientific, technical and medical journals, many of which are available in full text
- Books@OVID: For the complete text of key nursing and nursing pharmacology books
- EBMR (Evidence-based medical reviews): For comprehensive reviews on the assessment of medical treatments, preventions, rehabilitations, and diagnostic tests
- MEDLINE: For citations and abstracts of articles from medical and allied health journals
To Search:
- Click on the Continue button to select a database to begin searching
- Click on the title of the database you would like to search
or...
- Select more than one database by clicking in the boxes to the left of the databases you would like to search
- Click on the Open selected resources button at the top of the list
- Once you have selected the databases, you may do one of five different types of searches as represented by the following tabs:
1. Basic Search
- Before searching, you should click on Limits to expand the Limits option
- Limit your search to one or more of the following:
- Ovid Full Text Available: For full text articles only
- Abstracts: For articles with abstracts
- Publication Year: Select the year from the drop-down menu
- If one or more of the above limits is not available, click on the Edit Limits button and select the limits you would like to add. Once you have selected additional limits, click on the Customize Limits button
- Enter your keyword(s) in the box provided on the screen
- Click on the Search button
2. Find Citation
- Search for a specific article for which you already have author, title or publication information by entering one or more types of information in the boxes provided on the screen
- Article Title
- Journal Title
- Author Surname
- Volume, Issue, First Page Number, etc.
- Click on the Search button
3. Search Fields
- Enter your search terms in the box provided on the screen
- Select the fields in which you would like to find these terms by clicking in the boxes to the left of the field names provided (e.g. abstract, author, title, journal name, etc.)
- If you would like to display additional fields, click on the Show All tab below the search box
- Click on the Search button
4. Advanced OVID Search
- Select the type of search you would like to do as follows:
- Keyword
- Author
- Title
- Journal
- Enter your search terms in the box provided on the screen
- Click on the Search button
5. Multi-Field Search
- Allows you to use Boolean operators (see Searching Tips) while searching for keywords within various fields
- Enter your keywords in the boxes provided on the screen and select the field from the drop-down menu in which you would like to find the keywords
- Choose the Boolean operators you would like to use to join your keywords
- Select the limits you would like to apply to the search
- Click on the Search button
Searching Tips:
Using Boolean Operators:
- To expand a search, combine terms using "or," e.g. TEENAGERS or ADOLESCENTS
- To narrow a search, combine terms using "and," e.g. TEENAGERS and ONTARIO
- Use brackets to group expanded search terms together, e.g. (TEENAGERS or ADOLESCENTS) and (ONTARIO or CANADA)
To Truncate Search Terms:
- Use * to truncate a word, e.g. FAMIL* finds FAMILY, FAMILIES, FAMILIAL, etc.
To Display Records:
- The various steps of your search are displayed at the top of the computer screen in the Search History box
- To display the results of a particular search, click on the Display link in the Actions column
- In the Results list, various links beside the record indicate the available information for each article
- Click on the links to retrieve the following information:
- Abstract
- Complete Reference (includes citation, abstract and references only)
- Table of Contents (the contents of the journal issue in which the article is found)
- Ovid Full Text (for the full text article)
- PDF Full Text
To Exit:
- Click on the Logoff button at the top of the computer screen
To Download Articles:
- Click on the Ovid Full Text or PDF Full Text link to retrieve the full text article on the screen
- If the article doesn't open right away, select Click this link to open the document
- Once the full text document is on the computer screen, click on File and drag the cursor down to Save As
- Choose the computer drive to which you would like to save the file and the appropriate file format (.txt, .htm, etc.)
- Click on the Save button
To Email Full Text Articles:
- Once the full text document is on the computer screen, click on the link for Email Article Text in the upper right corner of the screen
- Enter the email address to which you would like to send the article and click on the Send Email button
