eLibrary Canada is a full text database with a focus on Canadian content that includes articles from magazines, newspapers, and reference books as well as maps, images, transcripts from TV and radio shows, and streaming audio and video clips.
On-Campus Access: If you are searching eLibrary from a computer at Cambrian College, click on the following link or type the URL for eLibrary in the appropriate box on your Internet browser: http://elibrary.bigchalk.com/ca.
Off-Campus Access: eLibrary is available to students from a remote site through Cambrian College's Student 411 service.
To Search:
- You may search for all materials or select a specific type of material by clicking in the boxes next to one or more of the following:
- News
- Magazines
- Books
- Maps
- Pictures
- Audio/Visual
- TV or radio transcripts
- Enter your keywords or a question in the box provided
- Click on the Search button
To Limit Results:
- Click on the Advanced Search link next to the search box to go to the Advanced Search page
- Limit your search further by selecting one or more of the following:
- Canadian sources only
- Scholarly journals only
- To a specific reading level only
- You may also limit your search to a specific document title, publication title, or author's name as well as to a specific date range
Topic Search:
- Click on the tab for Topics at the top of the computer screen
- Select a topic from the list to find articles on the subject of your choice
Advanced Search Options:
- The default search is a Natural Language search where you may enter keywords or a question (e.g. What is diabetes?)
- To search using Boolean operators, select Boolean Search as your search type (just below the search box)
Using Boolean Operators:
- To expand a search, combine terms using "or", e.g. ADOLESCENTS or TEENAGERS
- To narrow a search, combine terms using "and", e.g. ADOLESCENTS and ONTARIO
- Use brackets to group expanded search terms together, e.g. (ADOLESCENTS or TEENAGERS) and (ONTARIO or CANADA)
Reference Search:
- Allows you to search for articles from reference books, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, etc.
- Click on the tab for Reference at the top of the computer screen
- Select one or more of the following types of sources:
- Dictionary
- Thesaurus
- Encyclopedia
- Atlas
Add to My List:
- To create a list of articles you would like to print or email from your search results, click in the Add to my list box below each item in the list you would like to add
- Click on the My List tab at the top of the computer screen
- Click on the Print List or Email List link at the top of the screen
To Print Articles:
- Click on the title of the document to retrieve the full text article on the screen
- Click on the Print View link at the top of the article
- Click on the Print button on your Internet browser menu
To Email Articles:
- Click on the title of the document to retrieve the full text article on the screen
- Click on the Email link at the top of the article
- Enter the email address to which you would like to send the article in the box provided on the screen
- Enter your name (as the sender of the article) in the box provided on the screen
- You may also enter a subject and/or a message to accompany the article
- Click on the Send button
To Exit:
- Click on the Exit link at the top of the computer screen
