Advertising program suspended

Release
March 2008

At its March 27 meeting, the Cambrian College Board of Governors revisited the
status of Cambrian’s two-year diploma Advertising program. Based on a variety of
data, the Board of Governors suspended the program, directing the College to
develop a plan that outlines how best to provide education for this career field.

“Since the Board meeting in February, when the Advertising program was first
discussed,” said Board Chair Joan Mantle, “feedback from focus groups has been
received and another month has passed in terms of application and confirmation
data. Program suspensions are not taken lightly, and the Board asked for this
update as part of its responsibility to the College and the community. In light of this
current information, we think it prudent that we take this time to ensure both client
and employer needs continue to be met.”

According to Sonia Del Missier, Vice President, Academic, data and feedback
from alumni, students, and employers strongly suggests that the College needs to
review the program relative to workplace changes and client expectations.
“We have diverse needs among employers and diverse interests among
students,” said Del Missier. “Our challenge, our responsibility, is to ensure
continued program relevancy and a continued strong enrolment base. So far, we
have 76 applicants and only 9 have indicated Advertising as their first choice.
Students who have applied will be contacted and will be assisted in terms of
determining options.”
