During the month of May, Cambrian College hosted a number of activities for high school students - and one for elementary school students - that introduced them to the College and to some of the career paths available to Cambrian graduates.
On May 5, 2009, grade 9 and 10 secondary school students from Chelmsford Valley District Composite School, Confederation Secondary School, Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School, St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, and Lasalle Secondary School participated in a Day in Trades. Students observed program-related demonstrations, participated in hands-on activities and workshops, and had their questions answered by faculty and staff.
On May 7, 2009, Cambrian hosted Justice Day, which offered hands-on, interactive workshops for grade 11 and 12 students from Lasalle Secondary School, Sudbury Secondary School, Espanola High School and Confederation Secondary School that highlighted College programs and career paths in the field of Law and Justice.
On May 12, 2009, grade 11 and 12 secondary school students from Chelmsford Valley District Composite School, Lively District Secondary School, Lockerby Composite School, and Lasalle Secondary School were able to Discover Careers in Health Sciences as they toured the Cambrian campus and participated in hands-on activities and workshops in the areas of physical fitness/leisure management, dental assisting/dental hygiene, paramedic and fire service, nursing and personal support worker, medical laboratory technology and medical radiation technology.
On May 14, 2009, Cambrian's Media Mash-Up gave grade 10, 11 and 12 secondary school students from Bishop Alexander Carter, Chelmsford, Sudbury Secondary and St. Benedict an overview of Cambrian's media and communication programs, including: Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising Graduate Certificate and Broadcast New Media Graduate Certificate. Students participated in two workshops and toured the facilities. One workshop involved an on-air session in the eDome, where participants took part in a press conference and news cast scenario. Students were able to play the part of a journalist at a press conference and then had to take turns acting as the anchor or the reporter for the news cast that they filmed in front of a green screen. The second workshop had students participate in a Communication Idol challenge, where they worked in teams to outline an advertising campaign for a product and also create a successful PR launch event for this product.
On May 20, 2009, more than 100 grade 7 and 8 students from St. John, St. James, St. David, and Marymount Academy, took part in Technology Day. This event was designed to spark interest in technology-related programs and careers. Participants took part in hands-on activities and workshops, some of which included: Household Chemistry, Panning for Gold, Computer Networking, Let's Talk Science, Building a Hygrometer, and Making and Breaking Concrete.
