Dave Perkins, a second-year student in the Journalism program and the assistant editor of The Shield, a student newspaper produced by students in the program, was awarded third place in the Student News Writing category at the Ontario Community Newspaper Association Awards during a ceremony in Toronto on April 1.

A native of Ajax, Perkins won for his March 31, 2005, article, In-Security on Rez., which dealt with some of the issues regarding surveillance cameras on campus. “This story was a direct result of Bill (Radunsky) and Chris (Krejlgaard) pushing me to find answers to students’ questions,” said Perkins.

Perkins is currently on placement at the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines and will be graduating this spring.
