April 2007

Cambrian Journalism student Joel Desbois and Cambrian alumna Natali Martinez were recognized for their journalistic abilities at the Better Newspaper Awards ceremony in Niagara Falls on March 31, 2007.

Joel, a second-year Journalism student, took second place in the Student News category for his piece, Time to Make Poverty History, which appeared in The Shield - the newspaper written and produced by students in the College's Journalism program as part of their studies. This year, Joel also placed third in the Canadian Newspaper Association?s national awards for his story, Burd Migrates to Hollywood.

Natali, a graduate of Cambrian's Journalism program, took third place in the Student Feature Writing category for her story, Stripping for Tuition, a piece she wrote for The Shield during her second year in the program.

I'm happy for Joel and Natali, says Chris Krejlgaard, faculty coordinator for The Shield. I know the time, effort, and care they put into their articles, and it was gratifying to see them recognized by professionals in the industry. Judging by the feedback I received from editors at the convention, I'm confident they will have long, rewarding journalism careers.
