Irene Nizzero, a professor in the School of Justice, Access and Community Services, captured a bronze medal in karate in the veteran women’s category at the World Karate championships held in Benidorm, Spain, during the week of November 6, - 11, 2006. She competed in the Traditional Forms event and in the Traditional Weapons event, winning the bronze in Traditional Forms.
The regional qualifying event was held in Sault Ste. Marie in April and the nationals were held in Gatineau, Quebec, in May. Irene and her daughter, Alexis, were among 1,600 competitors from over 25 countries world-wide who met in Spain to compete in the World Championships.
“This was a very exciting opportunity. Karate isn’t a part of the Olympics, so this is as close as one gets to that kind of experience. My success is a testament to the training that I received at Benoit’s Martial Arts and the personal training and encouragement that I received from Jason Laurin, Assistant Coordinator of the Athletic Centre at Cambrian College.”
