What is a Behavioural Interview ?

It is a form of interview that focuses on your education and work experience.

Purpose

The process is designed to allow you to show you have demonstrated specific competencies required to be successful in a position.

How to Prepare

Review the job posting to identify  required competencies and key words such as ‘time management’ or ‘teamwork’.

Reflect on your past work, school and community experience and recall situations where you have demonstrated such competencies.

The STAR Approach
Situation – Briefly describe the situation (what, when, where)
Task – Describe the task.
Action – Describe what you did to achieve the goal(s).
Result – Describe the overall result and what you achieved.
Tips
When describing your experience, focus on what you have done. Use ‘I’ not ‘we ’ when explaining the situation, tasks, actions, and results.
Focus on explaining one situation. (Avoid changing examples)
Avoid providing examples of what you would do and instead provide what you have done.
Situations can consist of describing work, education, or community experience.
Treat the interview panel as though they do not know your experience or skills.
