On Thursday, May 10, 2012, Cambrian College hosted Justice Day for secondary school students in grades 11 and 12. Approximately 90 students from Lasalle Secondary, Lockerby Composite, Sudbury Secondary and Espanola High School participated in various activities throughout the day. This event was designed to showcase some of the skills and knowledge that students in Cambrian’s School of Justice acquire during their studies.

Students were provided with hands-on experience through a variety of activities. They participated in tasks in which they utilized the military alphabet that officers use on radios; they learned which items are contraband in the prison system; and how to do cell searches. They also performed various police exercises that an officer might do while pursuing a suspect.

“This is an excellent event because it gives students the opportunity to experience some of the course content Cambrian students learn in the Police Foundations, Community and Justice Services Worker and Corporate Safety and Security programs,” said Kimberley Glibbery, Academic Manager Schools of Justice, Community Services and General Studies. “We want to encourage them to consider a career in the Justice Field, or perhaps solidify their decision if they have been considering it".

On March 1, 2012, ten second-year Dental Hygiene students from Cambrian College, along with their professors, boarded a plane for Vietnam. Their mission was to travel to the hill tribe villages in Sapa, Vietnam, to promote oral health and provide hands-on oral hygiene education to local children. Prior to the trip, the students had conducted a lengthy fundraising campaign that included bake sales and the Walk for Oral Hygiene. Students were able to raise over $15,000 for the mission.

Students were given the opportunity to spend a few days in Hanoi where they visited the Old Quarter, the Museum of Ethnology, the Temple of Literature, a Water Puppet Show and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Presidential Palace. From Hanoi, students travelled to Sapa, which is a northern village in the mountains, where they worked with two different tribes; the Black H’mong tribe in the village of Ta Van and the Red Dao tribe in the village of Ta Phin. They handed out thousands of toothbrushes and floss and helped to educate students by providing oral hygiene lessons.

While in the villages, the students also created innovative dental hygiene activities, including the brushing song, which can be seen in the video. As part of their mission, students were also able to share in an ethnic-style family experience in each of the respective villages where they spent a night with a host family. The final day in Hanoi was spent at one of the local orphanages, where students conducted more oral hygiene activities and also handed out toothbrushes and floss.<del datetime="2012-05-10T14:49" cite="mailto:exfranceschi"> </del>

This mission was a life-altering experience for Cambrian’s dental hygiene students that also allowed them to put some of the skills they were taught at Cambrian College to use.

“All of our hard work and the months of meetings and fundraising events truly paid off and provided an invaluable and rich cross-cultural learning experience at a time when these students are preparing to embark on their professional careers,” said Nancy Rose, R.D.H, B.Sc., Professor at Cambrian College.

On Wednesday, March 28, a group of Civil Engineering students from Cambrian were at Ontario Power Generation’s Coniston Generating Station for a tour that was arranged by Cambrian professors Brent Eckert and Amelia Thompson.

“The students were a pleasure to have at our Coniston Station, and from all accounts, they very much enjoyed seeing a real, working generating station,” said Jeff Fournier, Public Affairs Officer Central Hydro Plant Group Public Affairs. “The students got a first-hand look at the operation of a remotely-operated sluice gate and three operational hydroelectric generators during their tour of the dam and generating station. It provided them with the opportunity to see the relationship between their area of study and the actual workings of a power generation station. It also gave them a glimpse of what it will be like in industry once they graduate.”

Cambrian College’s Civil Engineering programs provide students with practical experience while, at the same time, preparing them to become skilled and knowledgeable members of a civil engineering team. This tour is one of the many ways that Cambrian College provides students with hands-on experience in their field of choice.

About a dozen dual-credit carpentry students have put their skills to good use by building structures to help wildlife and a local charity. This spring, Wild at Heart Wildlife Refuge Centre donated materials for students to build squirrel and bat houses, and provided direction on the design of the animal dwellings.

“We need specially built houses for bats and for baby squirrels,” said Wild at Heart Construction Chair Brian Morissette. "Once our orphaned squirrels are off formula, we place them outside in enclosures with a squirrel house. When they are mature enough for release, we transfer the house with the squirrel inside to its release location. This way, the squirrel has a home until it has a chance to become familiar with its new surroundings." Morissette said the bat houses will be sold to raise funds for the charity. He explained that when properly located, the wooden shelters attract bats, which benefit humans by eating pesky insects like mosquitoes.

Carpentry professor Ryan Forigo said the students embraced the woodworking challenge knowing that it would help both wildlife and the community. “The students put a lot of thought into these projects, and it shows. The quality construction and enhanced design means that these dwellings will be able to withstand the elements for many years,” he explained.

Wild at Heart Wildlife Refuge Centre is a non-profit organization that helps approximately 500 animals per year, including mammals, songbirds, waterfowl, raptors, and reptiles. It’s located in Lively.

Celine Dubois, a second-year Medical Radiation Technology student, has been invited to present at the 2012 World Congress of the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologists (ISRRT), which is being held in conjunction with the 70th Annual General Conference of the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) in Toronto, June 7 to 10.

Dubois will be speaking about her creative work on a calendar that features radiographic images of objects ranging from musical instruments to plants. Brenda Cliff, coordinator of the Medical Radiation Technology program, suggested that Dubois submit her images to the CAMRT as an entry in the poster category.

The year and a half-long project involved taking hundreds of x-rays, combining science and art. Dubois said that Cambrian’s faculty and staff were extremely supportive of her work, offering advice and staying late to help with the process. “I am infinitely grateful for everything they’ve done,” she said. Dubois is currently working on a website to share her pieces. She’s also planning future projects. “Right now I’m really interested in fruit, and I’d like to try x-raying some tomatoes. I’m hoping to go back to Cambrian and see if Brenda will let me take some more images and possibly show other students what I’ve learned.”

The calendar Dubois created is being sold to raise money for the Northeast Cancer Centre. Copies can be purchased for $15 or two for $25 by contacting brenda.cliff@cambriancollege.ca

On April 26, Cambrian’s eDome was abuzz with inspiration and innovation as Sudbury’s inaugural TEDx event took place. Organized by Suzanne Shawbonquit, a member of Cambrian’s Board of Governors and Executive Director of Youth Innovation, TEDxYouth@NickelCity brought more than a dozen dynamic speakers and performers together with about 100 participants to spark discussion and share ideas. “Our goal was to start a movement here in Sudbury,” said Shawbonquit. “We have so many talented people with innovative ideas and inspirational stories to share, especially with our youth. We titled the event “Innovators and Icons” because our speakers are from all sectors: from science and the performing arts, to business and design. It was amazing to see the connections formed between the panelists and participants, and that’s why we’re already planning to do this again.”

The TED movement began as a 1980s American conference series connecting people and ideas from three sectors: technology, entertainment and design. Since then, TED and independently-organized TEDx Talks have exploded in popularity via ted.com and YouTube, bringing the nonprofit and “Ideas Worth Sharing” to cities and screens around the world.

When a child is diagnosed with a medical condition or exceptionality, parents meet a team of specialists offering different kinds of help. Barbara Burke’s son, Bennett, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was 13 months old. “At the time, I was completely overwhelmed,” she said. “I had no idea what the diagnosis meant, and was quickly introduced to a range of therapists, doctors and educators at the Children’s Treatment Centre. Since then, I’ve received a lot of support, and it’s made all the difference for Bennett.” Grateful for the expertise offered at Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord, Burke is featured in a video that explains the process to parents whose children will receive treatment, explaining different types of equipment used by various experts that work with children.

The video is the brainchild of Emily Matheson, a professor in Cambrian’s Early Childhood Education program. She explained that while the video can alleviate stress on parents of children who have received a diagnosis, it’s also a great tool in the classroom. “Many of our Early Childhood Education students are visual learners,” she said. “For example, when our students can see and hear therapists teaching a child to use specialized equipment, it has a more powerful impact on them than reading about it or seeing a diagram in a textbook. Students immediately see a connection between the child and the specialist, and they see the role that a social worker, occupational, physio-, or speech and language therapist can play. Similarly, parents whose children will be undergoing that type of therapy will learn about what to expect.” Matheson also explained that the video will show students how “early childhood educators support parents and families, not just the children themselves.”

Student Gina McAfee agreed that the video will have a profound impact on students and parents alike. “Unless you have direct experience with the Children’s Treatment Centre, you may not know about the range of services available,” she said. “As an early childhood educator (ECE), you work with children in a variety of settings, with different exceptionalities. It really helps to see and understand what other experts are doing with the child, during the cycle of care.”

McAfee has worked at Walden Daycare for 17 years, and is now a supervisor for off-site programs. She’s earning her ECE diploma at Cambrian with funding from the provincial government, so that she can gain credentials necessary to allow her to continue working in her field. “It was daunting at first to return to school as a mature student,” said McAfee. “But, I love working with children, and the education I’ve received at Cambrian was over and above what I received in university when I attained my degree.” The provincial government has mandated that all early childhood educators attain professional certification by 2015.

The video will be screened for ECE students in class at Cambrian College and also for parents in the waiting room at the Children’s Treatment Centre at Sudbury’s Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord. It’s also available online on Cambrian’s YouTube Channel. It was produced by Cambrian College’s eDome.

Students in Cambrian’s Graphic Design and Art and Design Fundamentals programs have made a colourful contribution to the community in the form of a three-panel mural that’s helping to brighten the pediatric unit at Sudbury’s Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord(HSN).

The philanthropic project came with exciting design and logistical challenges, which the students embraced enthusiastically. “We chose an abstract design and a vibrant palette with both calming and energizing colours so that the mural would be distracting,” explained student Tina Hatzioannidis. “Working with the hospital’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC), we determined what would be best for the space and the people who use it. Together, we decided to create something that would remind children going through treatment or recovery of happy times. The design also had to appeal to both older and younger boys and girls, and I think that’s what it does.” Students fundraised to buy materials and they also spent over 1,000 hours painting to finish the job. The panels span 24-feet and are constructed with fire-resistant and washable materials to meet health and safety requirements in the pediatric unit.

The mural was unveiled at a news conference on April 25 in front of HSN staff, YAC members, and students and representatives from Cambrian College. “Great things often come from simple beginnings,” said Diane Belanger-Gardner, Administrative Director of the Family and Child Program at HSN. “When the students approached us with their idea, the timing was excellent, because this was a perfect project for our newly-formed YAC to take on.” According to Belanger-Gardner, families, staff and patients have been saying that the murals have brought a lot of cheer to the pediatrics unit.

HSN Senior Vice President and COO Joe Pilon emphasized that the hospital is a big part of the community, and that the students’ mural is now part of that too. Cambrian President Sylvia Barnard said she is proud of the students for “taking the initiative to put their skills to work in the community.” She also explained that “this is another example of the service-learning that happens at Cambrian. In this case, students learned about community collaboration in order to create something very special for patients, staff, parents, and visitors.”

At the news conference, the students also made a $300 donation to HSN using funds raised through the mural project.

Sudbury – A new multi-panelled handmade mural is hanging on the wall of the Pediatric Unit at Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord (HSN), thanks to a partnership between HSN and Cambrian College.

Students in Cambrian’s Graphic Design and Art and Design Fundamentals programs teamed up with the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) at Health Sciences North to create the mural, which measures 24 feet long by 4 feet wide, and is divided in three sections. The official unveiling of the mural was held today in the Pediatric Unit of HSN. During the unveiling ceremony, students at Cambrian College also made a $300 donation to the Pediatrics Unit.

“We are thrilled by the generosity of the Graphic Design and Art and Design Fundamentals students at Cambrian College and their coordinator, Johanna Westby, who partnered with us to brighten up our Pediatric Unit,” says Diane Belanger-Gardner, Administrative Director of the Family and Child Program at HSN, which includes the Pediatric Unit. “Families, staff and patients have commented on how nice and bright the murals are and how they created a cheerful environment on the Pediatric Unit."

Graphic Design and Art and Design Fundamentals students at Cambrian College contacted HSN’s pediatric department to create the mural as a philanthropic project. Students raised money themselves to pay for all materials and supplies and devoted 1000 hours to painting the mural. They wanted the abstract design to keep the viewer’s brain busy. The students chose tranquil, calming and energizing colours for a positive effect.

Cambrian College’s Music Program Coordinator Brenda Arrowsmith will be receiving the Woman of Distinction award in the arts category from the YWCA Sudbury in recognition of her volunteer work, her support for many music activities in the community, and the impact she has had on the lives of students. The award will be presented at the YWCA’s sixth annual Women of Distinction Awards Gala on May 5.

“Being a part of the Cambrian music community has helped to foster my strong connection with the local community,” she said. “Although it isn’t necessary to be given an award for something I enjoy doing, it’s an honour to be recognized. I am especially touched to learn that many former students contributed to this nomination as well as some of my peers, for whom I have so much respect. It’s very humbling.”

Arrowsmith, who has been a faculty member at Cambrian since 1983, has earned a number of awards over the years, including Community Volunteer Awards and Cambrian’s President’s Award for Excellence. She has been the principal clarinetist with the Sudbury Symphony for almost 30 years and served as the rehearsal conductor for six years. Arrowsmith has also been involved with the Sudbury Youth Orchestra for over 20 years, is a supporter of local festivals and school music programs, assists with the Northern Ontario Honour Concert Band, and is a member of the Nickel City Highlanders Pipe Band.

On March 14, eight Cambrian students and some staff members were given an opportunity to learn more about a new program that Rotary International has launched in Sudbury to assist job seekers who have disabilities.

The Mentorship Project for Job Seekers helps applicants find and pursue job opportunities in the community. “Cambrian is always looking for ways to provide our students with new and better ways to reach their career goals,” said Associate Vice-President Student Services France Quirion. “This program helps students build their professional and personal networks in the community through their mentors and through the Rotary Club.”

Participants in the program learn about the education or training that may be needed to reach their career goals. At the same time, through this program, Rotarians work to raise awareness among employers about the benefits of hiring someone with a disability. Details about the program were provided during a luncheon organized by Cambrian’s Glenn Crombie Centre for Student Support.

On Saturday, April 14, about 1,500 people visited Cambrian College to explore the campus, learn about programs, and make preparations to attend classes in the fall. “People come to our Spring Open House from every corner of the province,” said Nancy Ewen, Manager of Recruitment. “We have come to expect that, so this year, we decided to let our future students and visitors know that staff at Cambrian also come from all over the place, but we’ve all chosen to make Greater Sudbury our home. We encouraged all staff and volunteers to use permanent markers to spell out our names and home towns on our t-shirts. It turned out to be a terrific way to connect with people visiting from different regions, and our own home towns!”

From 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., the campus was buzzing with activity. Events like the Firefighter Fitness Challenge and a mining head frame building competition (organized by Cambrian’s Civil Engineering program) attracted plenty of attention from visitors. The Theatre Arts – Technical Production program put student talent in the spotlight with specialized lighting, music, and even a smoke machine to create a night-club atmosphere. Faculty and students also hosted other demonstrations in high-tech trades shops and labs, and staff and volunteers were available across campus to answer questions about anything from admissions requirements to employment prospects.

On April 11, Cambrian College’s first-year Public Relations students presented a cheque for more than $1,100 to the College’s official charity, United Way Centraide Sudbury and/et Nipissing Districts.

Public Relations Program Coordinator Nancy Griffin said she was proud of the students, who raised the money over two semesters. “This kind of project plays an important role in the education of students,” Griffin explained. “Service-learning experiences like this are crucial because they help students learn and apply their skills, and they allow our Public Relations program to give back to the community.”

The donation cheque was presented to Emily Mackwood, Resource Development Manager for United Way Centraide Sudbury and/et Nipissing Districts, in Cambrian’s Student Centre. “We’re so excited to see young people coming together to raise money for charity,” Mackwood said. “With this donation, we’ll be helping to fund a range of programs including one that helps abused women get back on their feet.”

In March, thanks in-part to the efforts of Jeffrey Walker and David Wilcock, professors in the Civil Engineering Technology program, and Daniel Walsh, a Civil, Mining, and Geology Technician from Cambrian, the College was able to donate a significant amount of school supplies to the Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) in Tanzania by Cambrian College.

The generous donation of books, tools and equipment will be used by faculty and students in VETA’s Civil Construction Diploma program.

“I would like to thank you for your (Cambrian’s) kindness and generosity,” wrote Board Secretary, Regional Director, VETA Northern Zone Angelus Ngonyani in a thank you letter from VETA. “I am sure that the College will continue to lend an active support with the ultimate goal of enabling our institution to attain higher standards in its training programs."

Cambrian faculty and staff have been working with VETA for over six years, helping to develop programs in Mining, Skilled Trades and Civil Engineering. Additionally, Cambrian staff have supported the growth of programming in the areas of Gender Equity, Environmental Practices and Entrepreneurial Skills. By developing these programs, Cambrian is helping VETA to respond to the education and training needs of the Tanzanian mining industry and their suppliers.

“Cambrian is always happy to support VETA’s work in Tanzania,” said College President Sylvia Barnard. “Helping the VETA program will in turn help Tanzania’s economy and improve access to vocational training and education for disadvantaged groups. As a college, we understand the need to meet industry needs with a skilled, work-ready, pool of employees.”

Four local comedians, Mark Gagne, Phil Rawson, Ryan Oldham and Michael Emond, had audience members “busting a gut” during the four-hour event, which was hosted by radio personality G-Rant from Hot 93.5.

The money raised from ticket sales and the silent auction was boosted by a generous $500 donation from Vale.

“ALS is a disease that severely affects individuals and their families,” said Ashleigh Buder, one of the event’s organizers. “Through our support, local families will be able to purchase medical supplies and modify their homes to make them wheelchair accessible.”

Beaver on Campus Signals Sign of Spring

On Thursday morning, an unexpected visitor was spotted on campus. Students and staff noticed a small beaver exploring the wet, but now empty “ponds” that make up Cambrian’s fountain.

Campus security notified Wild at Heart Wildlife Refuge Centre, and the rescue agency called in two volunteers: Samantha Hunter and Sandra Brunton, who are both students in Cambrian’s Environmental Monitoring and Impact Assessment program.

Samantha and Sandra immediately left class and picked up their rescue gear, eager to help bring the little “critter” back to the wild. “With the warm weather that we’ve been having, many animals are coming out of hibernation earlier than usual,” said Samantha. “The weather’s making them come out to search for food, and that’s a sign that spring is here.”

Working with protective gloves, a pole, a blanket, and a pet carrier, Samantha and Sandra had the beaver captured within ten minutes. “It was actually a small beaver, when you think about how big they can get,” explained Sandra, who has experience trapping the animals. “I would say it’s probably just a young one.”

Cambrian College’s Barrydowne campus is located near an extensive system of thriving wetlands. The rescuers brought the young beaver to a pond that’s part of that system, not far from Maley Drive.

Cambrian College Adjusts Program Mix for Fall 2012

News Type: Media Release

Text Content:
In order to meet the changing demands of students, industry, and employers, Cambrian College is making changes to its program mix, effective September 2012.

On March 22, Cambrian College’s Board of Governors voted to accept recommendations made by the College to suspend nine programs.

The affected programs are:

	Welder Fitter

Instrumentation Engineering Technology

Chef Training

Baking and Pastry Arts

	Hotel and Restaurant Management

Journalism

	Building Bridges

	Transition to College

	College Vocational

The Public Relations and Public Relations Graduate Certificate programs, which were considered for suspension will be moved to the School of Business.

In its presentation to the Board, the College explained the rationale for its recommendations to suspend the programs, citing various factors such as enrolment levels, delivery costs, and the need to reinvest in program areas that are experiencing increased demand.

“Change is always difficult, but as an organization, we need to continually reinvent ourselves and make responsible choices to ensure our long-term success and sustainability,” said Cambrian President Sylvia Barnard. “By making these changes, Cambrian will be able to invest more resources into program areas where we are anticipating long-term demand.

“Students who are enrolled in the affected programs will not notice any changes,” continued Barnard. “They will complete their program of study and graduate as planned. Students who have recently applied and were accepted into programs which will be affected by these changes will be contacted. We will be encouraging them to choose another program at Cambrian, and we will help them to make that transition as smooth as possible.”

Beginning in September, Cambrian will be offering new programs in Business Aviation and Wind Turbine Technician. New online courses will also be available across several other program areas, adding more study options for students.
