• ANI1100   -   003   -   Introduction to Life Drawing

In this course, students will be introduced to Life Drawing as an independent art form and as a component that is critical to the effective development of believable animation. Emphasis is placed on structural drawing through an introduction to human anatomy and on expressive drawing through a series of exercises. Students will focus on specific principles related to structure, proportion, weight, and line quality. Through a series of interactive lectures, discussion, studio work and field study, students will begin to incorporate knowledge of the material covered into their drawn work and start to build confidence in their own drawing ability.

• ANI1105   -   003   -   Introduction to Animation Drawing

In this course, students will be introduced to the basic skill set that they need in order to progress to higher levels of drawing ability. Students will develop a critical awareness of the fundamentals of solid three dimensional drawing through a series of exercises. Using examples from feature films and other sources, students will gain insight into the techniques and methods required for successful drawing for animated performance.

• ANI1110   -   003   -   Introduction to Visual Language

In this course, students will be introduced to the use of images in creating ideas and concepts and ultimately leading to the effective telling of stories through the visual medium. Using examples from classic live action and animated films, students are encouraged to develop tools to express their own ideas in an effective manner. Through interactive lecture, discussion, demonstration and studio work, students will increase their ability to translate narrative concepts into an effective visual communications process.

• ANI1115   -   003   -   Introduction to Painting & Drawing

In this course, students will be provided with the skills to enhance their conceptual and expressive development in Animation. This course will prepare students for the remaining courses within the stream and for building connections to story, life drawing, character design and animation. Students will explore potential career options and prepare for further study in their chosen field.

• ANI1120   -   004   -   Animation History & Styles

In this course, students will be provided with an overview survey of animation history from early cinema to the present day. Students will focus on the development of the birth of personality animation by Disney, and the productions created by the National Film Board of Canada. Other studios and artists will also be considered, as students examine the evolution of the medium and how technology, economics, artistic trends, individual artists and national cultures have affected its development. Through interactive lectures, screenings of films and research, students will examine the history of animated film, as a means to excel in their own animated work.

Semester 2

• ANI1200   -   003   -   Life Drawing

In this course, students will continue to study the fundamentals of life drawing. Students apply the principles of drawing covered in Semester 1 to drawn human and/or animal forms. Specific material on the skeleton and muscles of the human body is introduced and incorporated through a series of interactive lectures, discussions, demonstrations,and studio assignments.

• ANI1205   -   003   -   Drawing for Animation

In this course, students will add to the basic skill set that students need in order to progress to higher levels of drawing ability. Students will demonstrate an increased critical awareness of solid three-dimensional drawing as they approach the tasks of character design and storyboard paneling.

• ANI1210   -   003   -   Introduction to Story Concepts

In this course, students will introduce students to storyboarding as it relates directly to narrative structure. Emphasis is placed on the full storyboard process from initial sketch (thumbnails) to final, sequential panels. Through interactive lecture, discussions, demonstration and studio work, students increase their ability to translate narrative concepts into an effective visual communication.

• ANI1215   -   003   -   Advanced Painting & Drawing

In this course, students will learn advanced colour theory and composition. In addition, students will draw line and tone, 3-point and aerial perspective, and basic art direction and staging. They will draw and paint imagery (tableaux) from a story text that incorporates both character and interior and exterior environments. For term 2, drawing and painting will be taught in a sequential manner within the same course. There will first be a drawing based assignment followed by a related painting assignment. This required course provides students with the skill to enhance their conceptual and expressive development in Animation. It prepares students for the remaining courses within the program and for building connections to story, life drawing, character design, layout and animation.

• ANI1220   -   003   -   Introduction to Digital Methodology

In this course, students will be introduced to the digital tools that are used in the development of animation processes and products. Students will use their practical knowledge of the technical aspects of these tools to tell effective stories through animated film. Through interactive lecture, discussion, demonstration and application, students will prepare for further work in both 2D and 3D animation. This course also introduces students to Digital Tools and specifically, 2D software that is applied to animation productions. Students are being prepared for building connections to story, character design, animation, layout and painting.

• ANI1225   -   004   -   Film Studies

In this course, students will be introduced to the history of film through the study of international and domestic films that have influenced the art of cinema. Emphasis will be placed on the relationship between particular film movements and genres and their historical contexts. The early days of cinema will be investigated in some detail to familiarize students with both the technological underpinnings and psychological implications of the coming of film. Through interactive lectures, discussions, and film screenings, students will study films that are representative of significant stylistic and/or historical movements and will examine aspects of the film criticism such as genre, stardom, and auteurism.

• ANI2300   -   003   -   Interpretive Life Drawing:Animation

In this course, students will gain an understanding of life drawing as an independent art form and as a component that is critical to the effective development of believable animation. Emphasis is placed on structural drawings through an advanced study of human anatomy and on expressive drawings through a series of excercises.

• ANI2305   -   005   -   Basic Principles of Animation

In this course, students will be introduced to the principles of animation and elementary character design. Dimensional forms are used to construct solid, well-drawn characters. Emphasis is placed on learning to use and manipulate 3D geometric shapes and understanding human anatomy. Using examples from animated film, in class demonstrations and other sources, students gain insight into the techniques and methods required for successful design for animated performance.

• ANI2310   -   003   -   Story and Visual Narrative

In this course, students will be provided with and advanced understanding of cinematic practices and how they are used in storyboarding for short and feature films. Emphasis is placed on story structure, staging and storytelling practices. Through discussions, demonstrations, the use of film clips and studio work, students will develop their drawing skills and their ability to visualize ideas in the form of drawn storyboards

• ANI2315   -   003   -   Layout and Design I

In this course, students will be introduced to the animation layout process through a series of lectures, discussions, demonstrations, interactive critiques and studio work. Using supplied storyboards and designs, students will learn to apply the essentials of dimensional drawing learned in earlier courses to the production of both single layouts and short layout sequences.

• ANI2320   -   003   -   Digital Methodologies: 2D Animation

In this course, students will be exposed to opportunities to enhance the application of digital processes to the work in animation. Students will use both traditional and digital 2D methodologies to construct 2D animated sequences. Emphasis is placed on 2D animation, its construction, practice and application. Through demonstration and practical application of the tools, students advance their knowledge, skills and understanding of the 2D production process in order to create animations of their own design.

• PSY2350   -   003   -   Group Dynamics & Communications

In this course, students will develop an understanding of group dynamics and effective communication skills essential to the work environment. Students will also explore the various ways in which we send messages to those around us. Topics include: effective teamwork, leadership, group dynamics, active listening, conflict resolution, perception, non-verbal communication and creative group interaction.

Semester 4

• ANI2400   -   003   -   Life Drawing Studio: Animation

In this course, students will continue to develop the skill of dynamic life drawing. They incorporate the principles of observational drawing and their application to drawn human and/or animal form. Further material on the musculature of the human body is incorporated into a variety of assignments. Emphasis is placed on creating drawings that are lyrical, proportioned and volumetric. Through a series of interactive lectures, discussions, demonstrations, field study and studio assignments, students increase their understanding of the relationship between drawing skills and effective drawing, and creating animated characters within a story.

• ANI2405   -   005   -   Advanced Principles of Animation

In this course, students will explore and apply advanced animation principles to their animation and character designs, working within design rules established in semester 3. These include: continuation to build and develop structural drawing skills - expanding knowledge of character design to economize the detail of the animated character - design believable overlapping secondary action; and study animal anatomy, design and caricature. Through exploration of the character expression and movement, students gain knowledge in the processes involved in the art of classical 2D animation.

• ANI2410   -   003   -   Storyboard & Intro to Screenwriting

In this course, students will develop technical skills to create and board their own original stories and produce a short story reel. Studies include the use of dialogue and sound effects along with art direction, atmospheric sketches and colour scripting. A short leica reel will be created incorporating all of these elements. A rough model sheet will be produced from storyboard drawings, showing character evolution over production time.

• ANI2415   -   003   -   Layout & Design II

In this course, students will develop the skills necessary to resolve difficult layout challenges from established storyboards and design elements. They will engage in storyboard analysis, scene planning and compositing activities for exterior and interior scenes. They will learn to apply the principles of structural drawing, advanced lighting, 3 point perspective and warped perspective to horizontal, vertical and diagonal multi-plane layout pans.

• ANI2420   -   003   -   Digital Methodologies: Sound

In this course, students will learn the theory and practical use of sound for picture with a particular concentration on animated film. Topics include a detailed background of the technology and aesthetics of sound in current industry practice and throughout the history of motion pictures. The physical theory of sound and issues of digital representations of audio are examined through interactive lecture and discussion. In their studio work, students focus on the use of industry standard audio recording, editing and processing software in order to create a finished soundtrack for an animated film.

• ANI2425   -   003   -   Introduction to Performance

In this course, students will be introduced to acting and performance. The focus of the course is physical acting and its application to animation. Students learn basic acting theory through a series of interactive lectures, study of film examples (live action and animation) and practical exercises that will incorporate the theoretic principles learned.
