COLLEGE VOCATIONAL (VOPG)

Semester 1

• ISP1107   -   002   -   Introduction To Computer Use

In this course, students will focus on the presence and use of computers and specialized software aimed at assisting them to complete their assigned tasks. Students will integrate their computer skills to adapt them to their college work and to work independently.

• VOC1100   -   004   -   Communications & Human Relations I

In this course, students will increase their understanding of self and others and interpersonal skills needed to be competent and self-assured communicators. Students will identify what works when people communicate and what gets in the way. They will also increase their awareness of everyday communication behaviours and rapport building. Students will adapt a range of techniques to generate positive outcomes in their interactions with people. The skills learned are very important as part of their learning and personal development which may be applied to other relationships, including those with friends, family, and co-workers. As well, students will develop their writting skills which will assist them in a work environment.

• VOC1110   -   004   -   Adult Learning Strategies

In this course, students will examine strategies and techniques that will assist them in coping with their specific learning challenges. Students will be assisted to focus on how they learn. They will be helped to become more effective learners first as students, then as workers in a field of their choice. Assistive technology will enhance the ability to master information and to learn various types of material presented.

• VOC1115   -   003   -   Consumer Studies I

In this course, students will improve math skills, using techniques designed for students with special learning needs. Students will be provided a review and reinforcement of basic mathematics that relate specifically to skill training, as well as consumer skills. They will also focus on global and lifestyle issues relevant to new consumers. Finally students will integrate the use of technology in order to maximize the development of academic skills.

• VOC1130   -   004   -   Career Training I

In this course, students will explore educational and employment options; realize their potential for success in college and in the workplace; and discover the importance of academic skills and skills development to achieve success. They will begin by increasing their awareness of their values, aptitudes, strengths, abilities, interests, traits, and skills. They will also discover other types of skills including thinking skills, work habits, decision making, problem solving, employability, collaboration, and personal responsibility. Emphasis will be placed upon the development of a portfolio which will identify and document knowledge, skills and abilities.

Semester 2

• VOC1200   -   002   -   Communications & Human Relations II

In this course, students will continue to focus on their individual communication style to adapt effective ways to interact as part of a team, and to relate to others in the workplace.

• VOC1210   -   004   -   Career Development

In this course, students will develop the skills to make informed career decisions when exploring the opportunities and occupations available in the food industry. They will also develop their employability skills necessary to complete an effective job search. Each student will independently develop a personal profile and gain an understanding of their personality, interests, capabilities, values and skills.

• VOC1215   -   003   -   Consumer Studies II

In this course, students will develop their individual math skills that will support both their work placement and practical uses as part of their everyday life. A framework of activities will allow the students to experience the process of making decisions when becoming a consumer; budgeting money; living independently; banking; understanding credit and loans; and saving and investing.

• VOC1220   -   002   -   Adult Learning Strategies II

In this course, students will directly apply learning strategies, personal management techniques in preparation for college success. Learning strategies will include the following: completing homework assignments, participating in group discussions, reading various course materials, note taking, memory, oral presentation, test preparation, and individual and group projects and activities. Students will examine personal management topics including goal setting and time management techniques.

• VOC1230   -   008   -   Career Training II

In this course, students will demonstrate their ability to be work ready before they participate in the mandatory work placement component. ­ Students will identify what employers and co-workers in the workplace will expect of them. They will learn behaviours that are expected in the work place such as demonstrating responsibility and accountability; adapting to change; setting personal and work goals; developing work ethic, productivety and performance. They will demonstrate personal practices for success in work placement and future work opportunities.

• VOC1240   -   003   -   Field Placement

In this course, students will be experiencing work opportunities in an area of their choice. During this eight week training period, students are supported and supervised while gaining vocational skills. They will be evaluated on their professional work habits; skill development; interpersonal communication skills; and their ability to demonstrate the importance of self-advocay in the workplace to address challenges and barriers in the work placement environment.
